I'm kind of obsessed with signage. It was fun to play with the signs in this picture and to put my own text in some of them. I made myself laugh. I also enjoy this unfinished look in drawing. This was worked up based on a photographic reference. There is a joke in this drawing too (see if you can find it?), based on the following true story:
One day when I was on break from my Sarah Lawrence College undergraduate education and back in Texas where I am from originally, my ten-gallon-cowboy-hat-wearing grandfather, H.F., asked me, "Well, what are you studying in school?"
"Poetry," I said, which was the truth.
"Poultry!" he exclaimed. "You're studying chickens!?"
He was really excited about this development. I would be doing something practical and important with my life working with chickens. I don't think I ever corrected the miscommunication. Anyway, poetry and farming and working with livestock are more similar than it might seem. He was a real Texas guy. He could tell you the value of cattle by looking them over. He had a bee farm at one point.
And I'm still studying poultry--I mean poetry :)
